Do you ever get so overwhelmed with everything going on in life and wish you could shut everything down for a day, hour, or even for just a minute? If it’s not one thing, it’s another; we never get a break.
I always strive to be as positive as I possibly can, because I do believe that there’s a bright side to everything, even if sometimes that bright side seems just a little bit less dark. I also want to keep my blog as honest and open as I can because I know so many times we think we’re the only ones struggling when really we all are sometimes. There’s no doubt that my life is a little extra crazy than I would like it to be right now. Having struggles does not mean you’re being negative, but pretending like you don’t is going to hurt you too. I needed to write this out to remind myself and hopefully to remind you of what is really important. You are important, what you want to do is important, your goals are important, no matter what they are. Your mental, emotional and physical health is important, and whatever it takes to maintain that is important. Whatever is going on in your life right now that is disturbing your peace needs to be addressed. For me, I tend to let problems that aren’t my own consume me and break me down. They say misery loves company and there’s no doubt about that. Today I needed to remind myself that I get to decide what challenges I face, and in most situations I can choose not to.
Think about what you’re worrying about right now and how many of those worries are actually things in your control? If it’s out of your control, then what good is it doing for you to be worrying about it? I know, much easier said than done, but there’s always a starting point. Whatever is going to happen, is going to happen. We could be using this energy to be doing something for ourselves, rather than wasting it on something or someone that isn’t worth it.
Its mind blowing how easily we can change what we do with our lives, we could change it in a second if we really wanted to. We talk about how much we want something or how badly we want to change something but we never take the next step in doing it. We get one life and one try to do it right, and sometimes I forget that and lose sight for a moment but it’s SO important to remember. As cliche as the saying is, we are in control of our lives, we decide what is a priority and I highly recommend making yourself number one on the list. Whatever it is that is trying to take that spot or making you feel like something else is more important, is the problem. No one is going to wake up everyday and make sure that you are your first priority, so you need to wake up everyday and do that. I suggest that next time life is overwhelming you and you feel like you need a day, an hour or even just a minute, take it.
A small side note: I can not stress enough how important I believe mental health is. I hope every single person that reads this knows that. Because once you jeopardize that or let someone else jeopardize that, it is such an obstacle to get back. It’s not something you can see and often times not something we even are aware of until it’s gotten so bad. Also if someone you know tells you something about their mental health, don’t assume they’re making excuses or lying. It is so so important.
PS. I started an instagram to go along with my blog!! Where i can post daily thoughts and little posts in between these posts. It would be super cool for you guys to follow it 🙂

That’s so spot on …. worrying about things that we have no control over is my biggest flaw. I can feel my stomach twisting and my hands going clammy and then I just get everything completely out of proportion! Mental health is top of my list in terms of priorities too. It’s in my life every day, I write about it, I think, probably overthink about it, but crucially I work on it, and my God it’s such a battle. Getting there, but it’s a tough one. Thanks for the post, it’s truly helpful. ❤️

I completely empathise – you sound just like me! I’m currently doing ‘stuff’ for 2 friend’s weddings. I am tired but I don’t want to let anyone down. I know I am physically capable of doing what needs to be done but with less than 48 hours to go until the first wedding I’m feeling the pressure. It’ll all be good in the end – I can spend Sunday and Monday hiding away in a darkened room can’t I? Thank you for the timely reminder 🙂 I hope your problems ease. Take an hour out every 3-4 hours to have a drink, eat and read – a blog, a chapter of a book, etc. That’s what I’ve done and will do tomorrow and on Saturday morning before the first wedding begins! Onwards and upwards…

I can certainly relate to that. Especially working in child-care having to deal with a lot of unfiltered emotions (and also my own to add to the mix). You constantly have to prioritize and judge what is the most urgent right NOW and what can maybe wait a little longer. And most importantly tend to your own needs, otherwise you are going to suffer. Sometimes you just need to take off your focus to something soothing or simply other than a potentially stressful situation you are dealing at that moment. It helps to readjust and get a fresh perspective.

Oh definitely!! I can imagine that working in child care there is tons of emotions flying around, try to keep in mind that youre at work, and that you dont have to take that home with you. Try thinking about what you can do for yourself when you get home after a day like that. you totally deserve it!

Absolutely right. The tricky thing is, that there is always that on kid you take home with you (figuratively speaking). But I found some really useful strategies to facilitate the transitition from work to home. Easy things, like taking a hot shower, getting changed into other clothes. And of course writing always helps to let go of the things that preoccupy my mind. And taking care of yourself mentally and physically is something that is so important in my profession.

This couldn’t be more true sometimes I worry too much about others and their worries and I still should but my worries are of significance too. And what you said is correct like if we don’t take care of ourselves and prioritise ourselves then who will? And yes it may sound selfish but after the few days I have had what I want is “important”too. Thank you for reminding me xxx

Your observations on the difficulty to remain positive really hit home for me. Despite being a naturally melancholic-type person (I guess it goes with being creative), I am generally upbeat and optimistic, seeing the potential positives in most things. However, over the past three years, I have found it increasingly difficult to maintain that optimism. My ex-partner commented on this, saying that when she first met me, nothing really got me down, at least not outwardly. But she noticed that over the course of our relationship, that air of positivity was fading and I was becoming as pessimistic as her. But like you, I am also beginning to understand and accept those things that I have no control over, or even whether they are worth the energy to care about. It has always been in my nature to worry, to overthink everything and in some instances, lose perspective. But now I am becoming more aware, more cognitive about how these anxieties have ruled my life, and through that recognition, change is very much possible. Thank you for your insightful and honest posts.

Hey Matthew! I definitely know what you mean by losing yourself by being around someone that might not be the best for you. We become like the people we are around, whether we want to admit it or not. Im so glad youre starting to recognize whats important. No good in stressing over things that are going to happen either way. Keep it up!! 🙂

I’ve been working so hard and haven’t slept for 3 days. I figured I’d take today off to relax. Nope. Brain is too fast. I can’t stop or I’ll miss something. But to continue is to lose my sanity. Quite the conundrum.

I would definitely recommend you take some time off, if you think youll miss something in a day, imagine what youll miss if you hit a breaking point and need more than a day off. Take some time for yourself, youll feel refreshed and ready to get back to work!

I really enjoyed this article. When you asked, “…how many of those worries are actually things in your control?” I really had to sit back and think about what you said. How true that is. How incredibly profound it is. There is nothing that we can do about the actions, thoughts and decisions of others. However, worrying about them is something so many of us do. Lots to think about there.

It is so easy to get wrapped up in the drama occurring in the lives of others and to want to fix it for them. I suspect part of that is because we all need to feel needed. But the truth is that we all have our lessons to learn and only offering support, rather than stepping in ‘to fix’, can be the most helpful thing we can do for others. Allowing them to learn those lessons before them.
Also, trying to be present in the moment, knowing that so many of the events we worry about never occur, can help us focus on today. I often reflect on how much I’ve missed today while being in my head worrying about tomorrow or yesterday. Missed opportunities for joy and peaceful living.
Kudos to you for wanting to support others through your blog. Keep on writing. We all can make a difference with kindness and compassion.

Great article. It is so easy for our minds to race with all sorts of worries, big and small. That mindset can so easily become the norm; many of us need to be reminded that worries and doubts will always be there, but it’s how we deal with them that is important. Many of us need to be kinder to ourselves – and remind ourselves that someone else’s priority is not necessarily our own priority.

Much of what we worry about are things we can’t control anyhow. Sigh. What a waste of energy. It takes such practice to not do that.
