You aren’t what that person said about you, you aren’t who your sibling is, you aren’t the person your ex made you feel like, you aren’t who your parents are and you most certainly are not what has been done to you.
I’ve wanted to write about this topic for a while but today my brother had an episode and this felt like the perfect time to write it. My brother is bipolar, I assume it passed on from my dad but I probably won’t ever know for sure. He thinks he’ll never have a career and he can’t have dreams and he believes he genuinely has no chance at a future because of our family.
It breaks my heart.
Many of us have things that happen in our life that make us feel like our life is harder than it should be. Whether it’s a bad family, some sort of abuse, a mental illness, or whatever it may be but we can’t feel like that’s who we are. I have said it before, but it’s probably one of the most important things I have taught myself, sometimes things happen to us and we have to deal with them, but many times things happen around us that we don’t have to let affect us or become us.
No matter where we are in our lives we can literally be whoever we want to be. I don’t just mean in a career, I mean in every aspect of life. You don’t have to be who you were growing up, or last year, or even yesterday.
If that person said something to/about you, It uses their energy and affects them much more than it will affect you if you choose not to let it.
Have a sibling that’s living a life you hate? Well guess what, you aren’t your sibling, you’re you so you decide who that is.
Have an ex that made you feel bad about yourself? I think it says a lot more about them than it says about you, you’re better than they made you feel.
Have a family you don’t want to grow up like? You’re related to them but you are not the same as them, you can take any path you desire.
What ever the circumstances are, if you fight hard enough for something there’s no reason not to achieve it.
Every person deserves to know how great they are, and it’s not defined by things, people, or events that happen to you. Your life wasn’t decided for you when you were put here, you create it. I hate for anyone to go through life feeling like they don’t have the choice to do what they want or be happy. It’s the Law of Attraction really, if you let yourself believe you can’t be happy, then you won’t be. I’m not saying it’s easy, but you will instantly feel better deciding that you want to work on being something, and you will be.
Thanks for reading!

You are such an inspiration and so beautiful inside and out I love reading all of your posts and look forward to hopefully one day having an open line of communication with you because you seem to be one of the only lights that I have in this dark time of my life, much love to you!
My blog is fictionalized due to backlash I’d receive from my family if they knew about it, I’m from FL and American just can’t say that in fear of them finding out, but I hope you check mine out and look forward to hearing from you!

We get one chance at living and we should be brave enough to do it as ourselves not as others have defined us…we just sometimes need to be reminded that WE choose who WE are!
A great post and definitely something we all need to remember from time to time.

Everyday you get to build who you are, there is never a direct path in life to who you will be. When you look in the mirror and love that person that is looking back you win. The outside noise and opinions won’t because self love expands the world around you. Stay awesome!

I feel for what you are going through completely. As long as you’re able to distance yourself mentally and emotionally it will make you much stronger and will make your future much brighter. keep your head up. xx

I really enjoyed this. One thing that I remember, because it seems to be helpful, is to imagine myself how I wish for other people to imagine me. That way, I feel more control and freedom. I think it is because of the order: I do not let them imagine me first. It is good to imagine oneself positively, before negative criticisms and assumptions come. Then one might decipher what is true. What is true is that you are special, as Dr. Seuss explains, “Today you are you! That is truer than true! There is no one alive who is you-er than you!” I also like this quote, because it makes me remember–“Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.”

Exactly, you can be whatever you want to be. If anyone decides to try to define you they are wrong. Thats a great thing to remember. 🙂

Yes, I was just thinking about how people recreate themselves to be more appealing to others, so unhealthy. I don’t want to meet people who blend in. I want to meet eccentric people who accept themselves.

People are scared to be what they want. They fear others opinions, but if you live like that then youll never be truly happy. Im glad you realize that as well 🙂

An inspiring read. I struggled to get out my bed today because of anxiety about having to go food shopping and I actually said to myself “Amy you are a nurse, get your s*** together!”

I hope you got yourself out of bed! It’s okay to have anxiety though, as long as you know that it isn’t who you are.

Thank you. Yes our mental health is just that bad voice in our mind that tries to knock us down! Stay true to who you are! All the best, Amy Belle

This is awesome. Please tell your brother that it IS possible to be successful. I’m finding for myself, though, that I need to be in a job with flexibility. So, I couldn’t teach full-time, but I tutor and I’ve finally embraced my artistic side which I submerged (art’s not a real job…) and it’s been VERY successful and I love it. I can change things up when I get bored. For the most part, I’m my own boss. I’m working on the financial aspect – but I’ve been told repeatedly that people with lots of backgrounds are not skilled with money.
Thank you for liking my post because it lead me to your blog!! ❤️

Hello, Britney. I actually enjoyed reading this post. Some many times in my life I was so worried about other people perception of me. I would define myself based off what other people thought of me. I wasted so many years of my life needing validation. So many people need to read your message. Thanks for sharing.

just because some people have it worse doesn’t mean that your emotions and problems dont matter. There’s positivity in every day if you look for it 🙂

Reading this brought tears to my eyes. I’ve been put through almost every example you listed and I honestly felt as if you were talking to me. For the first time in a long time, you gave me home about my future. You made me feel like I can do and be anything I want to be. Thank you so much for writing this!

Thank you for your post. Sometimes I find it hard to separate myself from my family. Like they become my identity and the reminder that I am my own being, even though my family is not what I wish to be doesn’t mean that I can’t be exactly who I desire to become. We are amazing creations from God, find your interest, strengths, desires, and go forth, letting nothing stop you.

I wanted to remark about how your brother feels. I have been there, and thought I could never have the things I wanted. It took me a long time, three suicide attempts, and who knows how man hospital visits that I had over the last ten years.
Now I am a few months away from getting my bachelors degree in creative writing. I completed a screenplay and close finishing my novel of the same name. My point is, tell your brother that this bipolar journey is long and eventually you find your way. I did and I know he can.
